When you’re planning to take a road trip with your car, there are some checks you should have your mechanic do. You want to make sure that your car is in tip top shape and isn’t likely to leave you stranded on the side of the road or worse. Here are some things that should be looked at before hitting the road.

Road Trip

Fluid Levels

Your mechanic will check all the usual fluid levels that are normally checked when you have an oil change, such as the radiator fluid, oil, windshield wiper fluid, etc.

Tires

Make sure your tires have good tire tread and the proper tire pressure according to the tire manufacturer’s guidelines. Be sure to ask your mechanic to check the spare tire and jack also. You might find out these items are missing, so buy a spare and jack before the trip.

Wipers

You need good wipers when it rains. Replace worn wipers, if they are not doing a good job.

Belts

A worn belt can break when you’re on a long drive. All belts and hoses should be check for cracks and wear.

Headlights

Make sure your headlights and taillights are working properly and that your headlights are properly aligned. If one headlight it showing the side of the road instead of straight ahead, you are not going to be able to see well at night.
